Frequently Asked Questions
Radio Sport

To listen live, you need Windows Media Player. This comes automatically installed on Windows computers and a Mac version is available as well. If you don't have the player on your computer, please download the current version from Microsoft.

The Firefox web browser will work with the stream if the plug-in for the Windows Media Player files (.asx) is installed and correctly set to launch the player. Please see the Mozilla Firefox website for details on how to download and install the plug-ins.

Connection issues:

I can’t connect and I’m using a Mac
While Macs do most things extremely well, they do not come with a player that is capable of playing Windows Media audio or video. To solve this, most users install one of the following programs:
  • flip4mac which is available from Microsoft.
  • A player that will play a complete range of audio and video, such as VLC player.
Even with these two programs installed our pop up player windows do not always work on Macs. If they still do not work, you can access our streams directly by opening VLC player (or equivalent) and accessing this network address for the following stations:

I can’t listen to your stream from work
Many businesses have something called a firewall that can affect how you listen live. If you think this may apply to you, please contact your network administrator or IT person for assistance.
I try to connect to your Internet stream but nothing seems to happen
If you have software on your computer that automatically blocks pop-up advertisements, you may have difficulty in launching the tuner. The software cannot in some cases differentiate between an unwanted ad and the tuner. Try disabling the blocking software and then connecting to the stream.
My audio player seems to have connected, but I cannot hear anything.
Please check the following:
  • Speakers are turned on
  • All speaker wires are plugged into the correct socket
  • The sound card is working properly
  • The volume (in the taskbar of Windows) is not muted

Streaming Issues:

There are periods of silence occasionally in the Listen Live stream
You may occasionally hear moments of silence during our stream. There is nothing wrong with your computer. It's the nature of the beast. Between streaming our audio over the internet as well as various programming elements transitioning from one to another, there are sometimes a few seconds of 'dead air' heard on the stream. Stay tuned - the audio will resume in a few seconds.
I hear what your station is broadcasting on the Listen Live stream a few minutes after it goes out over the air
The delay exists because of the distance it travels from our radio station out over the web and then into your computer. The audio also "buffers" - it stays in front of the actual signal to attempt to recover lost data.
My stream keeps cutting in and out or stopping
Sometimes congestion or Internet traffic can cause "buffering”, where audio seems to cut in and out, or stop altogether. This can be caused by a multitude of reasons such as:
  • Your internet provider is overloaded with users.
Like cars on the motorway, traffic on the Internet is subject to traffic jams. When things are busy on the web, part of the audio information can be lost. When too much information is lost, the tuner will have trouble playing our stream.
  • Poor connection to your Internet Service Provider (e.g. Xtra, Ihug, Orcon etc)
You may have a poor connection to the internet. If you're using a dial-up connection with a modem, try disconnecting then reconnecting to the internet. Sometimes this will give you a better connection.
  • There is an outage on the internet in the path that you take to get to our servers.
Just like electrical power failures, Internet failures can sometimes play havoc when attempting to connect to our stream.
  • You are running too many things on your computer at the same time.
    Close all unnecessary programs.
  • Surfing the web while listening to our Internet stream.
If you try to browse a website with lots of graphics for example, your computer may not have enough capacity to simultaneously listen to our online stream.
  • Our servers are having issues or your computer is just plain slow!
Try changing the amount of buffering in Windows Media Player. Do this by first opening Windows Media Player, then selecting Tools > Options/Performance and change the buffering to 'Custom'. Try setting it to 30 seconds or more.
I get an error message about 'Active X Controls'
For Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7:
  1. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab > Custom Level.
  2. Look for "Run Active X Controls and Plug-Ins".
  3. Make sure the 'Enable' button is checked.
  4. Click OK to apply the new settings and try connecting again.
